Now, when it comes to making a phenomenal tamale, there are several factors contribute to making a great tamale, starting with the quality of its ingredients. Authentic tamales typically feature masa dough made from finely ground corn, which should be smooth, pliable, and well-seasoned. The filling is another crucial component, often comprising a savory mixture of meats, such as pork, chicken, or beef, combined with flavorful sauces, spices, and sometimes vegetables. And at the Del Rio Tortilla Factory, the balance of flavors is essential, ensuring that neither the masa nor the filling dominates the taste experience. Additionally, the texture plays a vital role—a great tamale should have a moist, tender masa that complements the succulent and well-cooked filling. Finally, the wrapping and steaming process are crucial for achieving the ideal consistency and flavor infusion. When all these elements come together harmoniously, resulting in a tamale that is flavorful, aromatic, and satisfying, it can truly be considered great.

This is the place I always order TAMALES from. Super delicious tamales. I've been a returning customer as long as I can remember. The line will be long when you go pick up your order. Be patient they ARE worth it. My step brother and his 'other family' grew up in this area and it has the best barbacoa and tamales, not only because it's all I know but because it tastes like home. A small yellow building nestled in between a bustling street and around houses that have been there for years. They have great salsa and pico de gallo to add to your barbacoa and their tortillas are nice and soft.

Whenever I come back here, I go to sleep dreaming about these tamales. During my most recent visit, I purchased 3 tamales and a package of bunuelas. To my delight, when I unwrapped the foil on the first tamale it wasn't 1, but 10 little perfect tamales! Each one was a spectacular 3 bites of heaven. One tamale would have been more than enough for 2 people but I'm SO happy I got 3 packs! Kicking myself for not getting more bunuelas! I adore this spot - the best tamales in Texas (my opinion).

I can tell you this - I have been going to this gem of a location (on and off) for over 15 years. The tortillas are some of the best you will find in central Texas. Honestly I have never met someone who doesn't enjoy them. Tamales, and barbacoa come in at a close 2nd-it's the perfect San Antonio Sunday stop.

This spot is a family-owned business since way back in 1974. Not only that, they have two additional locations in San Antonio and Poteet, Texas.
