Writer: Elliot F.Elliot F.

If you're not familiar with Cuban cuisine, you're really missing out. It's is a vibrant and flavorful fusion of Spanish, African, and Caribbean influences, shaped by the island nation's history, geography, and cultural diversity. Overall, Cuban cuisine is characterized by its bold flavors, hearty dishes, and tropical ingredients, reflecting the island's rich culinary heritage. And when you're in the city of Carrollton, Texas, my favorite Cuban foodies hotspot is named Cuban Dulceria.

Cuban Dulceria offers a delightful taste of authentic Cuban sweets and pastries, transporting visitors to the vibrant streets of Havana with each bite. Boasting a warm and inviting ambiance, this charming bakery exudes the essence of Cuban hospitality, welcoming patrons with the irresistible aroma of freshly baked delicacies. From traditional favorites like flan, tres leches cake, and pastelitos de guayaba (guava pastries) to unique creations infused with tropical flavors such as coconut and pineapple, every treat at Cuban Dulceria is crafted with care and passion, honoring the rich culinary heritage of Cuba. With its friendly staff and delectable offerings, Cuban Dulceria provides a memorable culinary experience that captures the essence of Cuban sweetness right in the heart of Texas.

Opened in 1979, this Carrollton bakery is worth the venture to the North Texas suburb for its authentic Cuban food. Owned by sisters Sara and Rita Vasquez, the cafe was originally opened by their parents and now has two locations in Carrollton. Besides amazing cakes and pastries, the cafe offers a full menu of sandwiches including the popular El Cubano.

Most people don't realize that this tiny bakery has been in existence for decades, and the women that run it took the business over from their father, a well known and respected baker from Cuba. If you have a favorite item, then I recommend being there when they open their doors. Everything is made in-house, and very few bakeries in the metroplex offer or make traditional Cuban loaves, their bread is usually gone by 1pm - especially on Saturday. I adore the package of mini-loaves, and after all these years, I know that if I'm going to the bakery specifically for them, I better damn well be there before noon! Lesson: The later you wait in the day, the more likelihood your fav bread, pastry, or dessert will be gone. Everything is created in small batches, so the product(s) is fresh and the items sold to you are recently prepared.

My wife and I have been coming here for a few years now because my best friend is a sucker for the guava pastries. At work, we usually order a few of those, some with cream cheese, a couple savory pastries, and a cream horn. Everything is always perfect, the pastry is flaky and buttery with the perfect amount of filling. The service is always fantastic, even on busy days and, listen, if you do find yourself waiting in line - consider yourself lucky because you get a few extra minutes to appreciate the ambience. Take the time to look around and appreciate the decor - the old photos, vintage trinkets, and the beautiful furniture. We came in October earlier this year and the place was decorated beautifully, literally felt like I stepped into the house from Practical Magic.

If you're in Carrollton, Texas and want to sample something different, this place is a must for you.
