If you live or work in Texas, you've probably heard of Abilene. But, like me, you don't know where it is. It's a city in Taylor and Jones County, Texas, United States. Its population was 125,182 at the 2020 census. It is the principal city of the Abilene metropolitan statistical area and about 135 miles west of Forth Worth.

When I'm in Abilene, I spend time doing whatever I can to find great food because (honestly) there isn't much else to do. And, over the years, we've spent a while looking for good Thai food here. It's named Krua Thai. Turns out this little place was under our nose the whole time. Their food is fantastic and I really loved the pad Thai and yellow curry. The Chinese sweet and sour chicken is really good as well and definitely more on the sweet side. Just a side note, even their mild (heat level 1) is pretty potent, so be careful.

As I mentioned above, my family and I love finding small out of the way places with good food. So far, after six visits, Krua Thai never disappoints! We were passing through the city recently and wanted Thai food (again). It was easy to jump off the interstate and get to their location. I called in the order and they estimated it would take about 25-30 minutes to get ready. It was a big order. And guess what? It was ready right on time. I got there early and had a nice chat with the staff as they bagged it up for me. We ordered a number of different items, including their medium spicy DUI Noodles (called Drunken Noodles in California) and several orders of spring rolls. When I was handed the bags, I could tell that the food was hot. When we got home to open up the food, it was tasty, and spiced just right. Perfect, in fact! It was a welcomed hot meal on a long road trip. We were so grateful.

Side note - during our most recent experience there, we had a great conversation with the owner about his hometown in North Eastern Thailand. What a nice man. He was excited to tell us about the Elephants his family owns. The Thai people are wonderful, kind, and excited to share their culture with all of us. He was kind, full of energy and so sweet to my family.

Note/Recommendation: The mango rice is amazing and sought-after by many people. My go to is the Penang curry at the number two heat. The portions are generous and it leads to a great lunch the next day. Here is a heads up the owner gave me: do not mix the rice with the sauce when saving for a second meal because it goes bad faster.

To make this spot even better, the food was grade A. everyone in our group enjoyed their dishes. I had pad se ew. It wasn't quite the same as I am used to in terms of texture and moisture. But the flavor was good and the beef was cooked well.

my fellow travelers had a ginger chicken dish over rice and the pad Thai with tofu. They looked great and they both said they enjoyed them.

Bottom-line: Great Thai food, reasonable prices, and good portion sizes. Wait is a little long sometimes for to go, but totally worth it. Give them a try the next time you're in Abilene!
