Trying new things, especially food, can be an exhilarating adventure that expands your horizons and enriches your experiences. Embracing unfamiliar flavors and dishes introduces you to diverse cultures and traditions, fostering a deeper appreciation for the world's culinary diversity. It's a chance to challenge your palate, break out of routine, and discover unexpected favorites that might become staples in your diet. Whether it's tasting exotic fruits, experimenting with international cuisines, or simply trying a new recipe at home, the act of exploring new foods can bring joy, excitement, and a sense of culinary accomplishment. If you love desserts and are interested in trying something new and different, you need to pay a visit to Hui Lau Shan.

Hui Lau Shan, a renowned dessert chain originating from Hong Kong, has firmly established itself as a paradise for mango lovers. Famous for its extensive use of fresh, ripe mangoes, this dessert haven offers a delectable array of treats that cater to both traditional and contemporary palates. Upon entering Hui Lau Shan, the vibrant display of mango-infused desserts immediately catches the eye. Their signature dish, the Mango Chewy Ball, is a delightful combination of chewy glutinous rice balls, fresh mango chunks, and mango puree, offering a perfect balance of texture and sweetness. Another standout is the Mango Sago Pomelo, a refreshing and creamy concoction that pairs mango with the subtle bitterness of pomelo and the delightful chew of sago pearls.

Nearly every time I visit Hui Lau Shan, I order the coconut jelly. It's smooth, has the perfect amount of sweetness, and is incredibly refreshing. The jelly is accompanied by mochi balls, mango, and what seems to be crystal boba, making it my perfect dessert. I cannot begin to tell you how many times I've ordered it. But lately, I've been experimenting a little bit and started ordering two new items: pomelo & mango with sago and taro black glutinous rice (cold). I never just order one or the other; I have to have both because they balance each other out so well! The taro black glutinous rice has super chewy mochi balls and pieces of taro throughout, which are smooth, soft, and sometimes served warm. The pomelo & mango with sago is so refreshing, and the mango pieces are always sweet. The mango ice cream really is the cherry on top. I usually alternate between the two desserts, and it smacks so hard.

This place can get SO BUSY on the weekends, with the line backed up all the way to the door. And don't even get me started about parking... the plaza is always popping, so be prepared to park far or circle around for an eternity trying to cop a spot. I had to wait quite a while for my order to come out, and I was just patiently waiting by the trash can because there was like no room to stand or sit. The desserts made up for it in the end, and all was well. The employees are always kind and hard-working!

If you love mango, you've hit the jackpot at Hui Lau Shan. I always recommend someone try the Mango Chewy Ball. The puréed mangoes in it are so flavorful and sweet, while the mochi balls are super chewy and fresh. Definitely buy a box of Mango Mochi while you're here. These might be even better than the actual mango desserts. These are also super chewy, have a chunk of mango right in the middle, and are covered in coconut shavings. Nothing but YUM, folks. However, I found the Mango Yogurt drink to be underwhelming; the mango flavor wasn't as vibrant as the flavor of the Mango Chewy Ball.

The ambiance of Hui Lau Shan is inviting, with a modern yet cozy decor that complements the colorful desserts. The staff is friendly and efficient, enhancing the overall dining experience. While the focus is predominantly on mango-based desserts, the menu also includes other refreshing options like coconut jelly and herbal teas, catering to a broader range of tastes. Overall, Hui Lau Shan excels in delivering high-quality, mango-centric desserts that are both visually appealing and delicious. It's a must-visit for anyone with a penchant for mangoes or a desire to indulge in unique and refreshing treats.
