The population of San Angelo is peaking at 100,000 people, and every single citizen loves a great meal—especially a great dessert. There's one spot within the city that everyone seems to love for a great pie, dessert, and good old bread pudding: Helen's Bistro and Bakery. First opened in August 2019 by owners Helen and Craig Keith, you can find this charming spot in the Stephens Library Café area. This beautiful space sat empty for over a year prior to their unveiling, and they are very proud to bring some life back into it through homemade baked goods, breakfast sandwiches, and lunch options.

Before Helen’s Bistro and Bakery Chapter 2, Helen and Craig operated Silo House at the Chicken Farm Art Center. Helen also runs her own food truck, Homemade by Helen, on S. Oaks St. in San Angelo. The two are also working on opening another Helen’s Bistro and Bakery Chapter 2 location on Ave. N and S. Jackson St. The library location is referred to as their “Chapter Two” since their main location is still in development. As they grow, they will be looking for more opportunities to reach customers and please them, including acquiring second-floor balcony space in the library to provide their lunchtime diners with more seating.

Since moving back to San Angelo, I was super excited to go to the old sushi place that was here, but it wasn't there anymore. Instead, this fine little bistro was sitting in its place. This establishment can be found inside the Tom Green County Library at Beauregard and Irving. The customer service here is great, with Helen herself recommending the Captain Crunch French Toast, which was outstanding. The quality of the food was excellent, with a menu that satisfies everyone who comes through.

Absolutely delicious! I eat here quite often now—soup is quick and hits the spot. Other dishes are homemade and may take a little longer to make, but they are well worth it. The atmosphere is clean, and tables are far enough apart to enjoy a quiet meal on your own or with others. They also have a great display of desserts. Helen's is a haven for dessert lovers and casual diners alike, renowned for its extensive selection of homemade pies, ranging from classic apple and cherry to inventive seasonal flavors that tantalize the taste buds.

Helen's bread pudding is a culinary masterpiece that transforms humble ingredients into an indulgent delight. Starting with chunks of buttery brioche or challah soaked in a luxurious custard made from heavy cream, eggs, sugar, and a splash of vanilla extract, the pudding is infused with aromatic spices like cinnamon and nutmeg. Baked to perfection, it is crispy on the outside yet irresistibly soft and creamy inside. Studded with plump raisins or chunks of dark chocolate, and perhaps a hint of citrus zest for brightness, each bite is a harmonious blend of textures and flavors. To elevate this dessert further, it is often served warm and topped with a rich bourbon sauce or a dollop of freshly whipped cream, making it a decadent finale to any meal and a surefire crowd-pleaser.
