First, when you walk into the main area (before walking into the building itself, you are invited by a nice outdoor seating area or rustic indoor options. The outdoor seating sits at the bank of the river. There are plenty of seating areas and even sitting near the nice view. When I first visited this spot, there was a live band playing which was a nice touch. The staff was friendly and the smell of amazing food filled the area. Something told me that we would have a great experience. The ambience is fabulous - Set up on a hill overlooking the river in front of the historic Gruene Hall, located on an older mill building the age of the building has not been changed in order to preserve the original structure.

I brought four friends with me. We all ordered Patron Margaritas - awesome! They definitely know how to make a margarita. Their margaritas are song worthy (give me one margarita...). We ordered some appetizers chips and queso, fries (really potato chips) and a Spanish artichoke quesadilla. Everything looked and tasted amazing. I don't say this often but there was not a single complaint about everything I had. I had a great time, surrounded by great company and friendly people.

Then, I had the red fish with green beans and my good friend ordered the chicken spinach salad with onion rings. I had a few onion rungs, they were the best I've ever had. The salad was very flavorful as well. With the dressing, salt from the chicken and Kalamata olives, the salt was a little overkill but I still ate the whole thing and downed a bunch of unsweetened tea. We all left very happy.

During my second visit, I ordered the pasta salad, a subtle maestro, graced the palate with a melody of fresh ingredients. Its refreshing notes harmonized seamlessly with the rustic ambiance, invoking a culinary nostalgia unique to the Gristmill. Meanwhile, I ordered the artichoke dip - a creamy masterpiece, unfolded layers of indulgence, each savory bite a journey through velvety textures. Loved it.

During my third visit, I had the fire roasted chicken and it was very moist and flavorful. My friend ordered the ribs and they said they were amazing, very tender and tasty. And the veggies... crisp tender and tasty. Then, to finish the meal, I ordered the 8 piece shrimp with a side salad and fries. I was totally satisfied.

And I've been back a few times since then and I love to come here for lunch. The burgers and onion rings are among the best I've had anywhere and their seafood dishes are beyond fresh. It always feels like a special occasion at the Gristmill; the ultimate spot for lunch in Gruene.

Nothing says Hill Country like the scenic view overlooking the Guadalupe river and Texas heat! Be prepared, when you choose to eat here you may be seated near a ceiling fan, fan or totally rely on some breeze to come your way. Every time I visit this spot, the wait staff is friendly and welcoming. They are on top of their game with suggestions if you're unsure what to get.
