The city of New Braunfels is a city that formed the majority of my childhood. And since it's home to the iconic Schlitterbahn Waterpark and the tranquil waters of the Comal and Guadalupe Rivers, I still appreciate the ample opportunities for outdoor recreation, from tubing and kayaking to hiking and camping. The downtown area is my all-time favorite - boasting quaint shops, eateries serving up Texas-style barbecue and German delicacies, as well as vibrant art galleries. With its warm hospitality and unique blend of Texan and German influences, New Braunfels invites visitors to explore its rich heritage and create lasting memories. And not far from South. Segiun Avenue is one of the best spots for an awesome dinner - Huisache Grill.

This spot was originally built in the 1920’s, during the 1930’s it was a storage shed for the A-Cafe Restaurant located in the larger building facing San Antonio Street. It was a residence during the 40’s, and Schmaltze’s Chili Bowl from the 1950’s, followed by Roma’s Chili Bowl. Roma’s served what was considered the best chili in town, providing lunches to Mill Street High School students and railroad crews alike. A progression of other restaurants in the building served up Greek, Chinese and Mexican food. One year it was the site of the local Jaycees’s Halloween Haunted House, and it has also been used as a feed store and an antique shop. The owners spent a lot of time extensively renovating the building. There's a room that has a 'leaping cat painting' which was a part of the entire original dining room. The Huisache Grill opened its doors in October 1994, though that turned out to be just the beginning of a long-term, multi-faceted project. And now, in New Braunfels, it's a big hit.
My first experience with this place was in 2022. My friend took me out for dinner here it was wonderful. We started with their fried brie wonderful and Shades of Blue Riesling. Our server was helpful as we decided what get for our main course. With her help I chose Caesar salad and bacon wrapped shrimp; my friend went for the tri-salad sampler. I never forgot the flavor of the food, ambiance of the dining room and the quality of customer service.
About a year later, a group of us went out for the evening, celebrating my little sisters birthday and the food was delicious once again. We had an amazing spinach and artichoke dip with crostini's...Basil Chicken, Loin Steak, and Beef Medallions with grilled shrimp. Superb!

During my third visit, we wanted to try a totally different experience, ordering everything that we wouldn't normally sample. We enjoyed 2 different Cabernet wines, the charcuterie board, bacon wrapped shrimp and spinach salad with salmon. One of my favorites is the local honeycomb on the charcuterie board. It is especially good paired with the cheeses. My better-half enjoyed the sauce with the shrimp. I loved the combination of apples, blue cheese and salmon on my spinach salad. It was a big diversion from our standard 'meat and potatoes' experience and we adored the night, the meal and the atmosphere.

Take my advice and treat yourself to a delicious meal with fine service. You will often see the beautiful blonde manager usually wearing a straw hat, helping behind the scenes and also pitching in serving tables out front. Don't wait for a special occasion to partake in a fabulous dining experience. Go often and enjoy great food and Payton will leave you feeling warmly welcomed and genuinely appreciated.
The next time you're in New Braunfels, you need to give this spot a try. It's a refreshing change of pace. You won't regret it.
