Fantastic Jamaican Cuisine in Killeen: Island Spice!

Jamaican food is highly underrated. And if you don't have a lot of experience eating it, you're really missing out. In the event you don't know what Jamaican food is, it's a blend of several cultures, including a mixture of cooking techniques, flavors and spices that were influenced by Amerindian, African, Irish, English, French, Portuguese, Spanish, Indian, Chinese and Middle Eastern people who have inhabited the island. It's also influenced by the crops introduced into the island from tropical Southeast Asia, many of which are now grown locally. A wide variety of seafood, tropical fruits and meats are available.

Island Spice is located on the 800 block of North Second Street, at the corner of West Sprott Street. It's easy to find; sitting right on the corner of the block.
This location is clean and professional and the staff is so happy and fun! I ordered a wide variety of items to ensure I could sample everything possible. I can tell you three things: When it comes to the meat offered, the oxtail just melts in your mouth. It was amazing. To ensure I got the full experience of menu, I ordered the rice beans, cabbage and fried plantains. All of this mixed in your mouth it's an explosion of greatness. Then, I tried the curry chicken and that became my favorite.
The moment I was finished my meal, I said to myself "This will not be the last time I eat here. I loved it. I walked out full and satisfied. Best of all, I had to bring food home. When it came to portion sizes, they did not hold back on the servings.
About four weeks later, I returned to grab an early dinner to-go and I was reminded that this has been the most reasonably priced meal I've had since I've been in Killeen with the largest portions. The size I had was described as a "small" and it was plenty. I had the curry chicken, rice and peas, and steamed cabbage. Everything smelled so amazing that I started eating in the car, sitting in the parking lot. I'm serious. It was so good and at a great price.
I've tried other spots, too. Truthfully, I've been going to random Jamaican restaurants in Killeen and I just so happens to accidentally come across this joint...and now, I'm a big believer. Great food! Reasonable price! Wonderful service! As you can tell, I absolutely love it!
Service is quick, the staff was friendly, and the food was amazing. I slid brought a friend who had never had oxtails before, and she was amazed. If you're in the area, I'd definitely say give this place a try, you won't be disappointed. I am always so satisfied and I definitely recommend everybody in Killeen should to go Island Spice and check it out for yourself!

If you're nervous about trying Jamaican cuisine for the first time, I recommend ordering the jerk chicken beef patty and fried plantains. That's a great introduction to wonderful flavors.
Their lunch specials are about $5. You cannot beat that for a great meal.
Vegetarians have an option, too! The cabbage is always fresh and you can taste the coconut milk in the rice and beans. Highly recommended for vegans!
