Coleman, Texas, is a small yet vibrant city located in the heart of the state, blending historical charm with modern amenities. Founded in 1876 and named after Robert M. Coleman, a signer of the Texas Declaration of Independence, the city proudly serves as the county seat of Coleman County. Coleman is renowned for its warm, welcoming community and rich agricultural heritage. Outdoor enthusiasts will find plenty of activities in Coleman, including hunting, fishing, and camping in nearby Lake Coleman and Hords Creek Lake. The city's picturesque setting offers a range of recreational opportunities that draw both residents and visitors. The historic downtown area, with its quaint shops and local eateries, embodies the spirit of small-town Texas while supporting a growing local economy and preserving its unique history.

For those seeking great BBQ or a fantastic salad in Coleman, Smokesmith is highly recommended. This restaurant, run by barbecue enthusiasts, offers excellent BBQ and a fun atmosphere perfect for watching sports on the big screen TVs. The owners work hard, have a great attitude, and provide great value at the bar, even offering a discount for paying with cash. However, there are a few areas where Smokesmith could improve. The entrance to the restaurant is somewhat awkward and could benefit from a clearer sign and a covered walkway. Additionally, the ordering process, which involves multiple staff members, can lead to service discontinuity and mistakes. Finally, the limited business hours (Wednesday to Saturday) can make visiting a challenge for some patrons.

Smokesmith comes from the team behind Rancho Loma, Rancho Pizzeria, and Black Cur Steak. Laurie and Robert Williamson have skillfully turned their attention to barbecue, creating a stylish yet simple space with long picnic tables, concrete floors, high ceilings, and old brick walls. The food is the star here, with standout items like supple brisket slices, tender St. Louis-cut pork ribs, rich pork shoulder, and jalapeño-cheddar sausage from San Angelo’s Drei Brüder.

During my last visit to Coleman, we were joined by our daughter's best friends from Idaho who had heard about Smokesmith. We ordered a family-style meal with brisket, pulled pork, two types of sausage, coleslaw, beans, and potato salad. Everything was excellent, with the meats ranking among the best in Texas and the vegetables offering a delicious distinctive twist. The servers were helpful and friendly, and the owners have done a fantastic job renovating the historic structure. We highly recommend Smokesmith—when in Coleman, be sure to give them a try!
