If you love hot dogs as much as I do, there's a single spot in Austin, Texas that will broaden your horizons as well as your eyes and appetite. Locally owned and operated, Black Sheep Lodge is a South Austin neighborhood bar & grill which has become a fixture in the 78704. It's located at South Lamar/Oltorf and this spot is the perfect place to come munch on an incredible hot dog and relax with a beverage from our full bar, a frozen margarita, a glass of wine, or one of our 26 beers on tap and over 125 bottled beers.

To me, a great hot dog is more than just a simple sausage in a bun; it's a harmonious blend of quality ingredients, expertly balanced flavors, and careful attention to detail. Firstly, the sausage itself is crucial; it should boast a savory, juicy interior with a satisfying snap to the casing when bitten into, crafted from high-quality meats and seasoned with a perfect blend of spices. Equally important is the bun, which should be soft yet sturdy enough to cradle the hot dog without collapsing under the weight of toppings. Toppings play a pivotal role, adding layers of texture and flavor; whether it's classic mustard and ketchup, tangy relish, crispy onions, or innovative gourmet toppings, they should complement rather than overpower the sausage. Finally, the art of grilling or steaming the hot dog to perfection adds that quintessential smoky flavor and enhances its overall appeal. Great hot dogs are not just a culinary delight; they're a nostalgic experience that captures the essence of summertime gatherings and street food culture. And in my opinion, Black Sheep Lodge is the expert.

This spot has great burgers, salads and miscellaneous specials and other munchies. Their fried pickles are some of the best we have ever noshed on. We always get this appetizer if we are lunching or having dinner here. Additionally, one item that I actually ordered last time in, were the chicken tenders. I know, 'how pedestrian' you may think, but actually not. After all these years, I haven't ever had them. I'm always eating the hot dogs but I finally ordered their big basket of chicken tenders and sweet potato fries. The tenders seemed almost like it was one and a half chicken breasts. The batter wasn't gooey or soft and didn't fall off after each bite. It was actually crunchy and well seasoned. The chicken was moist, not dry. The dipping sauce was a great compliment. I didn't finish them so took them with us and later in the evening, I munched on the left overs. They were still yummy, even when cold.

But nearly every single time I visit Black Sheep Lodge, I order their hot dogs.

No matter what I order, the meat within the hot dog is always fantastic - obviously grilled, not boiled, it was crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside. Amazing flavor! As far as being Chicago-style though, it didn't quite pass muster. The tomatoes were slices, when they're meant to be chunks, and the pickle spear, supposed to be the length of the dog, was only half the size I got at actual Chicago places.

During my last visit, I had the 'Portobello Philly' and my husband had three of their hot dogs and two sides of tater tots. I love the fact that they offer Pub Food for vegetarians and meat eaters...who would have thought? And, once again, the service was great.

Black Sheep Lodge is renowned for its great hot dogs isn't merely a destination for food; it's a hub of community, camaraderie, and great beers. As patrons gather around tables, they laugh and share stories while the aroma of sizzling burgers, hot dogs and freshly baked buns fills the air, creating an atmosphere that is as inviting as it is comforting. With each bite into a perfectly crafted hot dog, one can taste not just the quality ingredients but also the passion and dedication of the Black Sheep Lodge's chefs. Whether it's a casual lunch with friends or a late-night snack after a long day, Black Sheep Lodge offers more than just food; it offers an experience that lingers in the memory, drawing people back time and time again to indulge in the simple yet sublime pleasure of a great hot dog.

Three recommendations:

  1. Chili cheese hot dog is the best hot dog in Austin.

  2. If you go, and you are not afraid of fried food, try the fried cheese curds. They were perfect made, not too much coating and melty. Deelish!

  3. There's limited parking. Whenever I drive behind this place, I see signs giving some directions, guidance. You have to walk back around to the back door which used to be for employees only. They have outdoor seating as well. You'll love the atmosphere of this place with cool artwork on the walls and the weathered look.
