Blanco Cafe - the BEST Enchiladas in all of San Antonio!

For many Texans, enchiladas surpass burgers and mac and cheese as the ultimate comfort food. San Antonio’s claim as the Tex-Mex capital means that most any Mexican restaurant you step into will serve a satisfying enchilada, but the undisputed local choice is Blanco Cafe. And it’s no wonder they’d know how to make a gut-busting plate of cheesy enchiladas that won’t break the bank: The founder had 10 children to feed. Today his grandsons run the original restaurant, which has expanded to a total of five glorious enchilada-slinging destinations.

Let me just state this - Blanco Café provides some of the best American cheese enchiladas that I've had in my life. A co-worker of mine from Instagram posted a few photos and one video of this spot about six months ago and I had to try them.

First of all, the staff is fantastic - friendly, congenial, delighted to see you and accommodating. The restaurant itself is clean, neat and organized. Now, you might find yourself waiting for a table but that is a testament to the business and attraction of San Antonio. If you find yourself waiting for a table...be patient.

Secondly, Price. The pricing is more than reasonable, considering the volume of food you get in a single order. My friend and I ordered a Deluxe plate, two orders of 3 Cheese Enchiladas, 1 Bean & Cheese Chalupa, Side Guacamole, and choice of 1 Soft or Crispy Taco. With tax and gratuity, we didn't spend $30 between the two of us. We could not finish it all and we left spending less than $15 per person. For the quality of the food, that is incredible.

Third, Reputation. This place has been in business many years when people first starting making positive noise about it in the 1980s. Nothing has changed except the prices...and they are still very reasonable prices today. For example - the Mexican platter is the best and is still beyond voluminous for even the hungriest person. Now, keep in mind (due to the popularity of this place) parking can be a little difficult at times due to the popularity of this restaurant but the food is definitely worth the wait.

Fourth, Amazing Breakfast. When you're in need of a great morning meal, this place has the best tacos, coffee and breakfast in the entire state of Texas. The service is quick and the staff is so nice. I travel in/out of San Antonio but I make it a point to eat breakfast here whenever I can manage it.

Fifth and final: It's fundamental Tex-Mex: At Blanco Café, you'll receive a classic Mexican diner. Want the best enchilada experience in all of San Antonio? Order the cheese enchilada, hands down. The enchiladas are appropriately drenched in their delicious red enchilada sauce and topped with cheese, and of course the plate has rice and beans on the side. Yum!
