If you're familiar with deli food, you've probably heard of a 'Reuben Sandwich.' If you haven't, a Reuben sandwich is a North American grilled sandwich composed of corned beef, Swiss cheese, sauerkraut, and Thousand Island dressing or Russian dressing, grilled between slices of rye bread. It is associated with kosher-style delicatessens, but is not kosher because it combines meat and cheese. Very, very popular in Jewish delis...and delicious when really made well.

Well, I spent the past week in north Dallas, near Plano, Texas and a new friend of mine loves to eat at one spot where he declares 'it serves the very best Reuben sandwich you have ever had' - at Cindi's New York Deli.

The five locations of Cindi's New York Deli and Bakery are rapidly becoming favorite hang outs for hungry folks in Dallas...and I have just become one of them. One part New York neighborhood deli, one part coffee and pancake house straight out of the 50s and one part Southern mom and pop diner, the comfortable atmosphere envelops you. Toss in the cheerful touches of far-east color painted by well-known Vietnamese artist, Tri Minh Nguyen, and the interaction with friendly, courteous staff and you've got Cindi's! All over Dallas, families nosh on the bakery's near-famous bagels, Challah and rye bread, pastries and cheese blintzes. They are almost located in strip malls, so shoppers from nearby shops can drop in for energy boosting hamburgers, stews, stuffed cabbage and spaghetti to keep up their shopping pace. Additionally, folks who are out on late nights won't oversleep and miss breakfast - breakfast is served all day long. You'll typically find office workers come in for the lunch and dinner specials available every weekday and others use this business for catering/party trays, etc. One way or another, there's something for everyone at Cindi's!

If you've never heard of it before, Cindi's is a small deli chain that possesses a few locations throughout the greater Dallas area and I repeatedly visited the spot on North Central Expressway, near I-75 and Northhaven Road).

Well, before walking in for the first time, I searched Yelp for a good breakfast restaurant that opened early and boom....the same recommendation. The hotel breakfast buffet at my hotel was very expensive and basic. So I said - "No...it's time to try something new."

I found Cindi's in a shopping center and it was bustling with customers. I was amazed to see that only did they have breakfast but a NY deli menu all day long. So I skipped the breakfast craving for the pastrami Rueben. Let me say this right now - It was excellent. Warm fresh sliced pastrami with ozzy melted Swiss cheese with sauerkraut and Russian dressing. Nice portions $14 before tip.

About two days later, I was in the mood for a sandwich again..and I returned to get the same pastrami Rueben.

Then, about two later after that, during on slow-moving morning, I decided it was time for breakfast, about 9 AM. So, I popped in again and the place was packed. PACKED with people. Anyway, I ordered the pancakes and they melted in my mouth. They were the most fluffy that I have had from a restaurant. Light and fluffy, oh did I say fluffy? I also noticed that they offer different breakfast meat items, bacon, sausage links and parties, turkey sausage, etc. When one server passed me, she was holding a fruit platter. It looked so good that I wanted one. Another person seemed to have the same thing but with strawberry compote on it, YUM. I changed my order instantly and it was worth the wait. Phenomenal!

The wait staff was very nice and there was not a long wait to receive our order. The decor being a little if the New York atmosphere, but there is nothing like the real thing baby!

Now, when it comes to a great dessert, every friend I have knows that I'm crazy for a good Chocolate Meringue pie. And at this spot, their Chocolate Meringue pie is perfect! No pudding and whip cream on this one. No No. The crust is real (not over-processed from some Costco bakery supply shop), light and flakey. The filling has a perfect medium density, rich creaminess and savory - and is equally proportionate to the meringue... which is awesome, firm and melts in your mouth. I've had very good pies before, but this one beats the all! And trust me...I look for the best Chocolate Meringue pie everywhere.

Trust me when I tell you - get their Reuben sandwich with extra sauce and the coleslaw on the side. The accompanying pickles are amazing as well, and like a true New York deli if you get the side of chips it's literally a bag of chips.

The food is really amazing, the prices are more than fair and the portions are gigantic! The staff is friendly and efficient. One warning - Beware, it's crowded at breakfast/brunch time on the weekends... because it's so tasty! Give Cindi's a try when you're in Dallas!
