Pumpkin pie may reign supreme on Thanksgiving, but the true hero of the dessert table is pecan pie. Unlike its gourd-based friend that falls out of favor after the holiday season, pecan pie remains a popular dessert year-round. The American-born dessert’s origins date back to the late 19th century, and the recipe has remained largely unchanged since its creation. Here’s a look into the origins of pecan pie and how it’s climbed to a position of prominence on Thanksgiving tables across the country.
And in the south, as you probably know, Pecan Pie is a staple of the land. No question about it. But most people don't know that Pecan pie is an American creation. Pecans are native to North America; the nuts were propagated by Native Americans as far north as Illinois and the southern part of Iowa, according to Edgar Rose, a former engineer and self-made pecan pie expert who lives in Illinois. So it didn't originate in the south. We here we Texas, we make it 'our own thing.'
As with any classic dish, near-countless variations have emerged. Popular additions to the traditional pecan pie include bourbon, whiskey, shredded coconut, and chocolate. There are also pecan pie-cheesecake hybrids, pecan hand pies, and, strangely enough, pseudo-healthy versions involving chia seeds. Molasses or brown sugar sometimes serve as a substitute for the corn syrup, an ingredient that’s gotten a bad rap from nutrition advocates in recent years. And in Texas, especially in the town of Lubbock, the best Pecan Pie, hands down, is the Honeycomb Pie Shoppe.

Love this little hidden gem! It's located on 50th street and it's not just a pie shop for southerners. This is a made-from-scratch-by hand, perfectly imperfect pie just like you grew up eating. Their Pecan Pie is delightful - crust is flakey, the fillings are seasonal and each one is better than the last.
Though they've got a lot going on besides pie, the Honeycomb Pie Shoppe sure has nailed its name. Though you may get distracted by the countless other pies in the bunch, if it's you're first time, go with the pecan from this coveted pie shop. While the original Honeycomb Pie Shoppe is in Levelland, we've never had a bad or even mediocre pie from their second location in Lubbock, which is why it officially is our best pecan pie in Lubbock, Texas. Pie lovers, pecan pie newbies, and those who can't stand pecans are all turned into believers when they try one taste of the pecan pie at Honeycomb.
When I first started coming here a while ago, it took me a minute to find; kind of had to drive around the block to figure it out. I'm not the brightest first thing in the morning. Waited a little bit until they opened, then I rushed inside to see if they had what I was looking for. They did! Woot!! It was pricier than I would've expected, but the cashier and manager spouted something about special pecans or some other such nonsense (eyeroll). Luckily for them, I would've paid it just to make sure I had it for my guest's birthday celebration, LOL. And I have to tell you, I don't even eat Pecan Pie, y'all. I'm serious. Pecan Pie isn't my thing. But this stuff was truly bomb. My guest adored it (and ate it all week), and I enjoyed the sliver that I had too. These guys were a lifesaver to me, and I look forward to going back over the holidays to pick up something I'd enjoy, too.

So when it comes to Pecan Pie in Texas, especially in Lubbock, don't even think about it. Don't try to solve all the problems of searching, sampling and guess work. There is ONE place that you need to visit - the Honeycomb Pie Shoppe, hands down.
If you are looking for the most amazing Pecan Pie in the city of Lubbock, you won't be disappointed with this locally owned small business. I was having lunch and saw people coming in to just pick up pies to take home so I had to take one home myself and it was almost half eaten before I turned back, walked back in and purchased another one.
How's that for an endorsement?
