If you've never heard of Pepe & Mitos, it's located in the heart of Deep Ellum. The Rojas Family has been serving Mex-Tex dishes to the city of Dallas since 1994. They pride themselves on starting with recipes that date back generations. In fact, Chef Pedro Rojas took those generational recipes and added his unique style to their family classics.

And if you live in Dallas, and love Tex-Mex cuisine, this might be the best spot for you. And...if you love Migas, this is definitely the spot for you. And if you don't know what a 'Miga' is, it's a dish traditionally made from stale bread and other ingredients in Spanish and Portuguese cuisines. Commonly they are a breakfast dish made with fried pieces of tortilla and scrambled eggs, topped with Oaxaca cheese. Originally introduced by shepherds, Migas are very popular across the Iberian Peninsula, and are the typical breakfast of hunters at monterías in southern Spain. If they are prepared well, they are fantastic.

Well, my friends, and a few co-workers, were recommending this spot for months and I never visited it, until one Saturday I found myself nearby and my hunger pains were brewing. So, I said...'Why not?' SO glad I did. It was delicious! I'm going to tell you about my first two experiences.

In all seriousness, I did not set my expectations too high, even though Guy Fieri had given it strong endorsements on Cable TV. I would say that in all fairness, this restaurant deserves my five star rating, but I use them sparingly, and would be happy to give it an even higher rating (if possible) when I return. The exterior of the building reminds me of a hot dining spot in Monterrey or Mexico City - a building that appears to need maintenance and an interior that looks as old as I am. But that's the beauty of the spot. It's as if you were walking through Mexico and found one of their popular food haunts. It's perfect for the food. Love it!

Now, on my first visit here, I ordered the Migas (highly recommended by my best friend) and at first, I found them delicious...but slightly bland. And then my friend said - "No, don't just eat them individually, always mix in some of the beans and salsa with a little cilantro from your plate. So I took her advice...and...BAM...phenomenal!

So, I returned about 2 months later and tried the Migas again - superb! I'm telling you - mix the Migas with the beans, salsa and a little cilantro from your plate and you might order it again before you eat anything else. Their combination of eggs, chopped tomato and onion, and crispy tortilla strips, all drizzled with a smooth ranchero sauce makes them a delish choice.

But after the Migas, I decided to try the beef Chimichanga with queso which comes with rice and beans. They also bring out chips and salsa to start - so delicious and I love the little bit of heat in the salsa. The Chimichanga was crispy, savory, juicy and the queso was just so good I would've licked the plate. I knew that I would definitely have to come back to try some other items on the menu. While looking around, everyone's food looked amazing. People were smiling, groaning in delight and ordering additional sides. Can't blame them! I cannot believe it took so long for me to sample this spot.

The restaurant is a quaint, the service is wonderful, the Migas a delicious and the price is more than fair. Outstanding spot for lunch or brunch!

By the way - $5 Margaritas during happy hour. Need I say more!?
