If you love Frito Pie, you and I need to be good friends. If you've never even heard of Frito Pie, it's a dish popular in the Midwestern, Southeastern, and Southwestern United States, whose basic ingredients are chili, cheese, and corn chips. Additions can include salsa, refried beans, sour cream, onion, rice, or jalapeños. There are many variations and alternative names used by region. Frito pie may vaguely resemble nachos, but due to its messy nature, it is always eaten with a (usually plastic) fork. And if you live or work in the city of Dallas, Texas, I found the best Frito Pie in the city - Slow Bone BBQ.

Slow Bone BBQ has been serving Texas-style barbeque in Dallas since my college buddy moved here in 2013. I know this because my friend worked on the construction to get it built in time. This spot smoke sall of their meats on-site daily in a smoker that they affectionately call Miss Jessie (don't ask me why). Using only prime brisket, they offer lean and fatty ordering options so you can get your brisket just the way you like it. Additionally, their fried chicken has won hearts and stomachs of critics and patrons throughout Dallas as well.

Finding Slow Bone is easy - located at the corner of Irving and Wycliff; located adjacent to a Uhaul dealership and across the street from Wildman Art Framing.

Well, people were raving on Facebook and Instagram about Slow Bone's Frito Pie and I had to check it out. I am a huge fan of Frito Pie, especially if I work about 4 blocks away from the spot.

Although Slow Bone is one of my favorite BBQ spots in Dallas, I never knew it served Frito Pie. When I walked in (for about the 20th time in my life), I paid extra attention to everything. First, the ambience and service are awesome. The place is casual with ample seating. Bottom-line, don't feel the need to dress up to dine here. No one is worried about your pants or shoes. This is what sets them apart - their ability to serve anyone while whipping up phenomenal food and side

Don't get me wrong, I know that the meat is the star of the show in barbecue, but Slow Bone's side dishes are seriously 'poppin' too so don't ignore them. it starts with chili made from Slow Bone's smoky brisket and then...the amazing Frito Pie. Amazing! That first-rate chili gets ladled onto a pile of corn chips and generously topped with cheddar and onions. I dined for about 1 hour, ordered seconds and left full and beyond happy. So I knew I had to return.

The second visit (for this blog post), I found this place, once again, is delicious beyond compare but before I get to the food (for the recent experience) I just want to comment on the few things I also loved about this place. The owner was greeting his guests at the door, shaking hands, asking us our names and was being super gracious and welcoming. What I love about this place is I can order exactly what I want and how much I want. I asked for two slices of brisket one lean one fatty, one rib, one jalapeño cheddar sausage, one fried drumstick and a 1/4 lb. each of the smoked turkey and pulled pork, and one small portion of the horseradish potato salad (highly recommended by the owner as well) and got exactly that. There were no minimum weights I had to buy (and frankly I can't stand the places that make me do that). Also the prices were amazingly reasonable. My whole platter was $58.00.

But then I returned just for the Frito Pie...again! Visit #3. Yes, it is THAT good. The Frito Pie at Slow Bone is like an adventure; the combination of flavors in this dish is perfect. The chips are crispy and the beef and beans are cooked to perfection - there's just the right amount of flavor. On top, they put a generous helping of cheese, tomatoes, onions, and jalapenos that blend together perfectly for a truly unique taste. Also, I could be wrong but I believe they make their own special blend of Fritos and the combination with chili, diced onion, and cheese is unbeatable. The toppings are generous, making for a hearty meal that will fill you up in no time.

This BBQ joint is proper, the brisket is absolutely delicious and the mac and cheese is great. The fried chicken is unreal too. Definitely worth checking out. The service was friendly and fast, and the food is all so good. Definitely would recommend checking it out...and don't forget the Frito Pie!
