If you enjoy Asian curry and you happen to live in Plano, Texas, do yourself a favor - point your GPS toward Shin Chon Market, a Korean grocery store (11422 Harry Hines Blvd) and enjoy one of the best curry you have ever tasted. The Shin Chon Market is a great spot that's full of a good, concise selection of Asian products and I believe it carries a little bit of everything in its tight quarters. One of the only shortcomings about this market is that when to compare this market to a huge store like Super H-Mart, it's much smaller. For example, the 'home goods' and the 'candy aisle' are combined. But if you need to grab some fresh noodles, a tub of Japanese short-grain rice, or ginger tea, the Shin Chon will do nicely. I go there all the time.

But...within the market, you'll find a spot named Moriya Shokudo; a Japanese stall that's located on the far right of the building. It's grand opening was in May 2022. Moriya Shokudo is the first food business from owner Tadashi Nakazawa, who worked in education in New York City before moving to Dallas during the pandemic. Though Dallas has a strong, diverse Japanese food scene, Nakazawa noticed that much of it is high-end or luxurious. He has a passion for Japanese food...and it clearly shows in the flavor.

Moriya Shokudo clearly focuses on two specialties—tonkotsu ramen and Japanese curry—with a variety of appetizers and add-ons. In case you don't know, (according to Shokudo) Tonkotsu ramen is the king of Japenese soups for a reason; it's a ramen soup with a deep, flavourful broth that melds in perfect balance with the pork and those wonderful ramen noodles.

Upon my first visit, I ordered a curry katsu plate and a menu special Nakazawa is testing out: Katsudon, the fried pork sliced and plated in a rice bowl with an egg, pickled ginger, nori strips, scallions, and onions. It’s a loaded bowl and an enormous portion. I did some research while writing this blog post. Katsudon is a fried, panko-breaded pork cutlet with egg over rice and a favorite of Japanese restaurant-goers. According to Shokudo, it's a very popular dish all over Japan. Well, it was AMAZING.

Well, a few weeks later, I paid them a visit again and everything was so delicious that I wanted to keep eating and order more but I was so full I'd explode if I did that I expected the curry to be good since that's what everyone has been raving about-- it did not disappoint.

It reminded me of curry I had in NYC that was equally good. But what really blew me out of the water was the Tonkotsu ramen. Honestly I didn't even know this place had ramen until I looked at the menu. That was the best Tonkotsu ramen I've tasted in my life, and I'm very very picky with ramen (I don't think I've been extremely impressed by a single ramen establishment in the whole DFW except this and I've tried a lot of them). I wanted to just take a whole tank of that ramen home because it was so good. I’m hoping this is just the start for Moriya Shokudo. It’s certainly enough to help add a new address to Dallas’ culinary map. Next time we get a hunger for a good Japanese curry, we won’t need directions to find it.

Pay a visit - you will love it!
