Just in case you are not familiar with Huntsville, Texas- Huntsville, Texas, it's located in the heart of the Piney Woods region, boasts a rich history and vibrant community. Home to Sam Houston State University, it exudes a lively college town atmosphere while retaining its small-town charm. This town showcases picturesque landscapes, inviting parks, and a bustling downtown brimming with shops and eateries. Visitors can delve into its heritage at the Sam Houston Memorial Museum or explore the scenic beauty of nearby state parks. Huntsville encapsulates a blend of culture, education, and natural splendor, making it a captivating destination in the Lone Star State.

And within this cozy little area, there's a handful of restaurants I have sampled and only two or three were worthy of the time and money. But one that blew me away, was a spot named 'Sam's Table.' This spot exudes warmth and charm, inviting customers to indulge in a delectable array of American comfort food classics. From hearty breakfast offerings to mouthwatering lunch and dinner options, Sam's Table prides itself on using locally sourced ingredients to craft dishes bursting with flavor and freshness. This is a 'small town spot' that everyone knows about. Let me just say this - sporting tennis shoes and a baseball cap is great dining attire here. This is a historical location with a beautiful patio out back and an extensive wine list.

I've been here a few times because I work with a big client that lives near this restaurant. During my first visit (long ago) I remember ordering the Chicken Panini Sandwich at lunch and it blew me away. On my second visit, I enjoyed the tomato bisque soup which was bursting with flavor! On both my first and second visit, I also ordered a few additional items to go so I could enjoy them later in my hotel room.

About a year later, my hubby and I ordered the Calamari, shrimp tacos and chicken tacos, a bowl of butternut squash soup and a glass of pinot gris. You don't get a ton of calamari, but it was breaded nicely and my husband loved it. Tacos were great, good spice on the chicken one and the shrimp tasted fresh. But the star of the show was the Butternut soup! It was extraordinary.

If you're driving through the city, Sam's Table sits pretty close to I-45 which is good if you are traveling. If this is your time visiting Sam's, you'll also notice that the ambiance is rustic and the menu choices and food quality were high without being expensive. And if you're meeting a friend or family member for dinner, they offer a smaller room near the bar for a nice, experience with a little privacy.

In May 2023, a big group of our company were in town and I highly recommended this spot for the meal/gathering. I told everyone - "This place is one of those "Hidden Gems"...a diverse menu ranging from Tapas, Costa Rica, and American creations." Most of us decided to order their Costa Rican Seafood plate from the main menu Appetizer/Tapas section and added a side of rice and some tortillas. My good friend ordered the Lucky 19 Bearkat Blonde ale and said "This is a really great beer, crisp palate, and went well with the fish plate I ordered." The seafood dishes are absolutely incredible...a mix of shrimp, mussel, clams, baby shrimp, and chopped octopus. The flavors are so good and the rice complemented the dish very well. Even though this was an appetizer...it was a wonderful option. We even met the owner/chef Diego Varela and told him I was very impressed with the food and service received there.

For a few years, my work has allowed me to explore options around Huntsville for a quality lunch spot between appointments and I honestly cannot say enough about Sam's Table. Between the caliber of food, wide variety of their beer and wine selection, and friendly wait staff; every meal I've had there has been a highlight to my day.

Give this place a try. You won't regret it.
