Three years ago, my doctor informed me that my low-energy and feels of lethargy were due to a mild allergy to animal proteins. While I wasn't happy about it, I made the decision to face facts, accept science and become a vegan. Now, that doesn't mean I want to avoid edible pleasures...but it did mean that I had to seek out new answers. And I found the first one about two years ago - Capitol City Cakes.

Needless to say, I was thrilled to find that there was a vegan/plant-based bakery in the area I was going to be in Austin, so I stopped in.

During my first experience, I noticed there were lots of goodies in the display case, but when I inquired, none of them were gluten-free. BUT they did have a batch of gluten-free and vegan cupcakes in the back that I could get if I wanted, and I very happily said yes. There were three different frostings I could choose from: vanilla, peppermint, and peanut butter. Without hesitation, I chose peanut butter ... because, of course. I also got an oat milk cappuccino to drink there, and I ate the cupcake later. The cappuccino was delightful. Needless to say (again), I left very happy.

The second time I visited this spot, Ineeded something specific - a cute, fabulous tasting birthday cake with yummy icing! My best friend and I were going to be in Austin for a big birthday and we wanted to surprise everyone with a special cake to be shared with family and friends. When I called a few weeks before to order, Matt was incredibly nice and was great in helping me choose an amazing combination of flavors. I decided on a two-layer, 1/4 sheet size with vanilla cake, almond icing and lemon curd filling. A big thanks goes to Matt and the cake artist for adding an adorable cartoon RV decoration! The manager, Ricky, also called me to confirm the order. I picked up the cake at the bakery on Sunday afternoon. It was ready on time and looked beautiful! I can't say how much I appreciated their treating me so well, even though I'm not a local. The bakery case had loads of very tempting treats, too, especially the cupcakes! We ordered 1 dozen cupcakes to go...but I didn't sample one until the end of the night.

And later, at about 10 pm, when the party was ending, I was finally able to eat the cupcake at the party, I thought I'd died and gone to the good place. The cupcake was rich, chocolate-y, and very moist. The frosting was deliciously VERY peanut butter-y (which is amazing if you love peanut butter like I do). And the two together made for a delicious late afternoon sweet snack. (I will say there was maybe a bit more frosting than I would have liked for a cupcake that size, but better to have too much frosting than too little.)

I love this bakery! Can you tell? Such a quaint space and shaded outside seating area. The kolache was huge....and delicious! Whenever I am nearby they are wonderful for a quick visit, great coffee, a cinnamon roll, and savory/sweet kolaches. I will absolutely be back - again and again and again! Give them a try!
