I LOVE Chicken and chicken sandwiches and when I am spending time with my nephews in college (College Station, Texas A&M), I ALWAYS come here - Dixie Chicken. Trust me, if you positively love chicken sandwiches (such as a Popeye's chicken sandwich), Dixie Chicken is definitely for you.

This place takes me back. It is a great spot for 'keeping things simple' - a pitcher of cold beer, a great and filling burgers, and an atmosphere of times gone by. I ordered a burger and might appear to be nothing special, but I can assure you, it definitely was. I decided to order the 1/4 pound burger with fries (I just had to add it on) during my most recent trip and it was fantastic! As I was eating it, the cheese continued to melt even more! For this reason alone, I'll always come back...but the chicken sandwich is a fantastic meal and the best bar food and to relive memories with old friends.

Now - about their Chicken sandwiches. For some people, this can be a touchy topic. What type of batter works better—tight coats of seasoning and flour that shatter into oily little flecks, or popcorn-like blossoms of crackle and crunch? Does a chicken sandwich need pickles, or do tomatoes and lettuce suffice? Well I can assure you the Dixie Chicken makes it perfect for me! Their crispy chicken fillet is sandwiched between two pieces of Texas Toast with just the right amount of butter with a substantial piece of chicken, with the most perfect golden-brown hue to it that's—dare we say it—a bit more visually appealing than Popeyes'. The crunch you get with every bite is perfect and lasts noticeably longer than what you get from the Louisiana-style chain. The chicken itself is the definition of juicy, a marvel of fast food engineering. The potato bun—and its sweet, buttery softness—elevates the entire sandwich and, frankly, sets this thing above the rest. The generous smear of mayo-based sauce adds a creamy note to the lean chicken while foiling the fried, greasy notes with its slight acidity. It's amazing.

About the atmosphere: The environment is lively and the employees are amazing. Every time I come here I typically order two things: the chicken sandwich and the meat and cheese tray. It always reminds me of when I used to come there during college. The seating was packed because of game day but plenty of Aggies squeezed in and made room for others.

Four great things about this spot:

  1. The nostalgia alone makes this place great, which every Aggie will tell you. This is a great spot for a simple order - pitchers of beer, burgers, etc. My burger looks like nothing special, but I can assure you, it definitely is. Opted for the 1/4 pound burger with fries (have to add them on) this trip and it was great! Promise the cheese melted more later! Haha. I'll always come back to The Chicken for some great bar food and to relive memories with friends. They have a great country playlist as well!

  3. This place has been a College Station staple since the 70's. It's a dive bar for the students, offering drink specials most weeknights. I came in for Whiskey Wednesday, and Whooop! They pour heavy handed shots. Yeehaw! Beers are cheap, and they have a wide selection of cheap beers. Be sure to carve your name somewhere for prosperity sake. The tables are all carved to hell, and the bathroom seems to be a fine place to carve your own name in case you forget it.

  4. The Chicken is the definition of a dive bar and is a College Station/Texas A&M staple. There's always so many people there just having a good time, drink prices are unmatched, and you get to carve your name on the tables. What more could you want? As far as food, the Tijuana fries, or "T Fries," are a must.

They have a pretty good selection of comfort-bar food, ranging from burgers and fries to fried pickles and sausage, cheese & crackers. The Tijuana fries and fried pickles with ranch sauce are my absolute favorite.

This place has been around since 1974 and is easily the most recognizable restaurant/bars in College Station/Bryan. I'd say this is a must go to when visiting the city.
