Tamales and Texas - hand-in-hand, they go together. I love tamales. Who doesn't, right? Well, if you're in Houston, you have one easy choice to make - Alamo!

I lived in Houston for years and this has been one of my go to favorites for a very long time. Alamo's tamales and Taco are some of the best in Houston. They have some of the best tamales in town that are homemade. One friend told me about them providing tamales to a huge group for Christmas Eve. I mean a huge group. Like 3000 people. Can you imagine that? And that tells me one thing - These people know exactly how to run a business. They get you in and out no matter how long the line is. They have a great system in place and they really know how to make great food.

In Houston, pork and beef tamales here are some of the biggest and most popular items in town. And if they are homemade (and they taste like something your grandma would make), you've got a winner on your hands. That's Alamo. No doubt about it. Very flavorful and very tasty and very fresh. Also their breakfast tacos and regular tacos are simply amazing. They have some of the best breakfast tacos in town. They also offer several different Tamale options. I stick with pork and beef. This a a north-side Houston classic. If you love tamales and find yourself on Berry Road, this is your place.

Sadly what most people probably think of a tamale at a restaurant it's probably not handmade and they pour some kind of chili con carne sauce on top, the texture, taste of the masa is way off. Honestly, the tamales at most spots get a bad rep for that reason. Alamo, in my opinion, are true authentic northern Mexican tamales. Like the ones my grandmother and aunts would make in Mexico. Do yourself a favor get these! Now that I've been there many times, I tend to order what I love - Alamo's handmade Pork Tamales. In my opinion, they are the tops!!! Additionally, if you like pork tamales, they have spicy and mild options for you.

And now, about the customer service: Alamo truly stood out during my recent purchase and experience. From the moment I walked in, I was greeted with a warm and friendly welcome that immediately made me feel valued as a customer. The staff behind the counter went above and beyond to ensure that my dining needs were met promptly and efficiently. I asked about tamales and requested information to make a better recommendation...they were attentive without being intrusive, and their menu/product knowledge was impressive, helping me make the perfect menu choices. After I purchased everything (2 dozen tamales), I said to myself - "I truly look forward to returning for another outstanding experience." And then after I ate the tamales, I knew I would be back.

Alamo (the original location) is the best tamale spot I have yet to experience anywhere in Houston. The only tamales I ever eat are my grandmas, moms, and Alamo's so that should say something. They have a drive thru which makes it really convenient and they have fast service so you can't go wrong, even when you're in a hurry.

My personal recommendations:

  1. Consider the breakfast taco that contains: chipotle chicken, chicharron en salsa, fajitas with onions, chicken mole, picadillo, parrillada, carnitas with pico de gallo, al pastor. It is phenomenal.

  2. If you love tamales, consider ordering three types: Spicy Chicken, Pork and Spinach. All of them are equally awesome.

  3. Purchase the handmade tortillas by the dozen. They are fresh and amazing for the cost. Bring a few dozen home and have a party.

  4. On the weekends, consider ordering the Chicharron Colombiano. If you don't know what that is, it's Pork belly with skin and a lot of meat. This stuff is addictive.

Give them a try! You won't be disappointed! Alamo Tamales (the original, since 1960) is outstanding!

You won't regret it!
