If you're driving from San Antonio to Houston (or the other way around), you'll find a tiny city named Ellinger, Texas that isn't too far off of your driving directions. Ellinger is small...really small. In fact, Ellinger is a city in Fayette County, Texas. The population was at 203 as of 2021. It is located on the highway TX-71 about 12 miles southeast of La Grange and 2.0 miles from the Colorado County line.
Well, one little Texas goodie is a hallmark of this Ellinger. It's called a Kolache. And unless you've been living on the moon, you know what a kolache is. But just in case you don't, a kolache (also known as a kolach) is from the Czech and Slovak koláč. It's origin is a type of sweet pastry that holds a portion of fruit surrounded by puffy yeast dough. Common filling flavors include tvaroh, fruit jam, poppy seeds, or povidla. Now, in Texas, we enjoy sweet and savory forms of kolaches and it's become a staple of our great state. Some folks enjoy donuts...but some folks prefer kolaches.
And in Ellinger, one stop is rated to have some of the best kolaches in the entire state. The name of the business is Hruskas. Known for their kolaches and klobasnikys, their quality product has been featured in Texas Monthly magazine. But not just for kolaches...for their hamburgers as well! They also offer a wide variety of chips, snacks, drinks, and other gourmet items and...I kid you not...a gift shop for the latest in home décor, games, toys, and clothing! Clearly, this place has it all. If you want it, Hruska's probably has it.
Now, about their kolaches.

I've been to Hruska's about 25 times and I always go back when I'm driving from Houston to San Antonio. It's truly worth the detour. Now, I have to be honest. Although I adore their kolaches, my absolute favorite pastry item at this spot is the (cream cheese) puffs, but the regular cream cheese-based kolaches and the ham and cheese kolaches are amazing as well!
If you're a big fan of cinnamon rolls, they have them...and they are gigantic. Their muffins are flavorful, fresh-baked and moist. When I stop here, I always get 3-4 items to eat for breakfast alone. This is the halfway stop for my road-trips - I truly believe that everyone must experience the magic that happens at Hruska's.
When it comes to the kolaches itself, personal favorite is the pan sausage/sauerkraut kolache dipped in yellow mustard! Their boudin kolache is surprisingly tasty, and the apricot and blueberry-cream cheese dessert rolls are great, too.
During my most recent trip, I got a sausage and cheese kolache and the breakfast burrito. Both were excellent. The kolache had a good portion of meat and cheese and not too bready like many other kolache places. We took home a package of sliced peppered summer sausage kolaches. It tasted a little different, but awesome. Once again, this place verified that this place is a great pit stop for a quick snack or a great meal.
My hubby was with me and he ordered stuff that was totally different from my order. He ordered the pan sausage and cheese kolache. He literally ate it while standing in the shop, so he then ordered the sausage, egg and cheese breakfast taco. All he kept saying was "everything is delicious." When we drove away, we talked about how we can't wait to return so we can try the cherry, cream cheese kolache, snickerdoodles and coconut macaroons. This is a great place to stop with the family and take a break. The employees are always friendly and serve their customers with a smile.

Bottom-line, Hruska's is a great place to stop with the family and take a break. The employees are always friendly and serve their customers with a smile. You will not be disappointed.
