Ramen Tatsu-Ya in Austin - Tops!!

Writer's picture: Lawrence NorentoLawrence Norento

Visiting family in Austin, we were going to get pho but decided on ramen since I've never had it. Theeeee BEST!!! It was so good, the service was good, the venue was sleek but comfortable. It was actually warm outside today so we ate ours outside.

We were pleasantly surprised of how savory and flavorful this ramen was!!! I got the Tonkatsu ramen and it definitely made my taste buds fall in love. I'm definitely coming back to this place. The chashu and egg have this wonderful sweet glaze to them that compliments the savory broth really well. I was satisfied with one bowl. Was there room to stuff myself!? Yeah but I didn't want be food coma-ed. service was fast for a friend lunch time. And the vibe was chill, with music, edgy art, but nice. I'm planning on taking my family here when they visit!

During my second visit, I had the OG (Tonkotsu) - pork bone broth, chashu pork, ajitama egg, woodear mushroom, scallion, and sesame seeds. My boyfriend tried the ol' skool (Assari) - chicken shoyu broth, chashu pork, ajitama egg, menma, scallion, white onion, nori, and pepper. They're two very different types of ramen. The OG has an opaque, creamy, rich broth (with a pretty significant fat content) and comes with thin, straight noodles. The ol' skool has a clear, lighter broth and comes with thicker noodles. Both were delicious and packed with flavor. The chashu pork is so tender it falls apart as soon as you pick it up. The soft boiled egg had a wonderful texture and flavor; I wanted more of these eggs!

During my THIRD visit, I went with several other people so we ordered a variety of things. For starters we got Kizami Sweet & Sour Yodas (Shredded Brussels sprouts). They were delicious. The combination of veggies, fruits and garlic is really special. We ordered several ramens, #1, #3, #4 and the two vegans #8 and #9. I usually ordered #4 MI-SO-HOT but sometimes it is too hot for me. Today I got #3 MI-SO-NOT and added a bit of my friend chili bomb. I liked the fact that I could control the heat. A bit of a Fire bomb may have been great also. I also added pork belly and the extra meat made it a perfect meal.

The broth for the ramen is rich and delicious. The service is friendly, but efficient for this busy restaurant. The tables are comfortable enough to enjoy your meal but do not promote lingering. Some of the larger tables have you seated next to strangers, but they also allow accommodations for large groups. Options for customizing your ramen with a "bomb" are varied and tasty. Our family is fond of the spicy bomb which allows you to add heat to any recipe in the amount you prefer. They also offer house cocktails that are different from other bars and quite tasty.

This place is me and my partner's new obsession! When we first went to try it there was a line, so we knew it must be good. Man was it worth the wait. I ordered the Ol Skool Ramen and my partner ordered the Mi so Hot, we also got a side order of the pork dumplings and one of the bowls of rice along with two of their hibiscus teas. Everything was absolutely delicious! The ramen was warm and flavorful and tasted like comfort food, the dumplings were some of the most soft, tender, flavorful ones I've ever had, and the rice was tasty with its veggie toppings. Even the hibiscus teas were very refreshing! Everything about this place is too tier and so so good! And with so many things to order and different customizations for your ramen, you really can't go wrong! This will be a long time favorite of ours for years to come!
