Tapas, originating from Spain, embody more than just small plates of food; they represent a cultural tradition of communal dining, vibrant flavors, and conviviality. These bite-sized delights range from traditional classics like patatas bravas and Spanish omelette to more contemporary interpretations featuring fusion ingredients and innovative cooking techniques. The beauty of tapas lies not only in the diverse array of dishes but also in the social experience they foster, encouraging shared moments over a table filled with tantalizing flavors and lively conversation. And in Bryan, Texas, there is one eatery that makes tapas their hallmark - Elia Cafe
In recent decades, a revitalized hardware store located in downtown Bryan has become not only the residence of Old Bryan Marketplace but also a string of upscale dining establishments. The newest tenant, which opened its doors in November, has garnered attention not just for its Spanish tapas but also for its association with College Station's renowned Luigi's Patio Ristorante. Both establishments draw inspiration from the Tani family owners' parents and/or grandparents, named Elia and Luigi, respectively.
Upon entering Elia, it became evident that there's substance beneath the family narrative: the cuisine was exceptional. We sampled two tapas alongside a charcuterie board. The king trumpet mushrooms cooked in white wine, lemon, and garlic butter presented a simple yet boldly flavored dish, while the charcuterie board provided a delightful taste journey through Spain. However, our favorite was the array of empanadas, with the beautifully seasoned beef neatly encased in a light, grease-free crust. The ambiance, characterized by weathered brick walls, verdant foliage, and a sprinkling of bullfight posters, adds a unique dimension to the dining experience. And to top it off, Elia also caters to those seeking individual portions with its full-sized options.
